Cantwell is accessible by railroad, road and air. The earliest inhabitants of the area were nomadic Indians who trapped, hunted and fished throughout Interior Alaska. Originally, Cantwell was a flag stop on the Alaskan Railroad. The population of Cantwell cousists of emmigrants and Athabascan Indians. Its economy is based on tourism and seasonal work.
